My buddy Brad and I set out to catch us some bay fish Sun. and had a great day on the water . There was a little North wind blowing so we decided to try some of our close spots in the river that are protected from the chop and so close to town we burned about a quart of fuel to get there . The tide was running fairly hard outward and the sun was out . We anchored and started soaking some live shrimps as well as fishing the much talked about “Berkely Gulps” . Well 2 23″ redfish and 2 16″ trout later we were convinced that they work . Mix in a few croakers and smaller reds and you have pretty consistent action .
Well we broke a Cardinal rule of fishing and left biting fish to find fish . But it was stripers we were after .
We went to the railroad bridge further up and started fishing shrimp again and were greeted with a sheepshead . it was small and we released it to grow for my wife to catch . Then the stripers started up . The first two were good size and were earmarked for the table . We caught about ten more and another keeper sheepshead and called it a day .
All in all the species count was sheepshead, speckled trout, striped Bass [ hybrid]1 largemouth bass, redfish,Bluefish, croakers,1 mangrove snapper , a flounder , and both kinds of saltwater catfish .
What a great day of fishing Apalachicola style !!
